Impulse Control

Overview
Good things happen to those that wait. That is something that we have to teach dogs to manage just like we do with children. Ideally they have to wait and/or look to you for direction when faced with a situation that arouses them and over time learn to make good decisions and choices in these situations.

Food

Indoors
Teach them how to manage themselves with greetings and doorways

Outside stimulus
other dogs, people, bicycles etc

Train a very reliable 'look' or response to their name to be able to
immediately distract on arousal

Be a little unpredictable so that your dog focuses more on you than
the environment

Outlets for natural behavior
It also really helps to provide plenty of managed stimulation so
that some of the things that they like to do and are natural to
them like chase squirrels and scavenge for food are catered to-
fetch and tug of war are good for prey drive and interactive treat
toys/games where they have to sniff and hunt for treats are good
for scavengers and stuffed kongs are good for chewers.
